Our Vision for Student Success: Pre-Primary

This is the first of a series of posts highlighting the key initiatives in your Liberal government’s Vision for Student Success.

Last September, our Universal Pre-Primary Program launched in 50 schools across Nova Scotia, the first step toward offering the program in every school, for every four year-old in the province. Pre-primary is a free program that ensures equal access to quality early learning before a child starts school. Nova Scotia is the third jurisdiction in Canada to offer this type of program.

Research shows early learning is beneficial. Educational play-based programs like our pre-primary initiative have been shown to improve social, health and emotional outcomes and these benefits last a lifetime. It will also save families thousands of dollars in child care costs every year.

As a first step toward the classroom for Nova Scotia’s children—operating within the school system—this program also helps educators and administrators identify special supports that may be required for students in advance of their school years.

We are expanding pre-primary programming to all communities across the province. In four years, all Nova Scotia families who want to participate in pre-primary will be able to do so. Pre-Primary has a huge, positive impact on those who need it the most, levelling the playing field to ensure all of our children have the opportunity to succeed.
