Supporting Children and Youth with Autism

We know how important inclusive supports are to Nova Scotians and the challenges that come with a child in crisis. That’s why we’re investing $800,000 annually into a pilot program to help young people with autism who are experiencing behavioural issues.

Eight new specialists are now being hired as part of the Brief Intensive Outreach Service program. They will make up two teams – one based out of Cape Breton, the other in Halifax.

Both teams will have a social worker, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist and psychologist.

These teams will be able to respond quickly to situations where extra support is needed during times of crisis, as well as establish a treatment plan and work with the family for up to 8 weeks. We want to ensure families have the tools they need to respond to challenging situations, and we believe this program provides much needed supports.

The program will be run by Nova Scotia Health Authority and IWK Health Centre and should be up and running this summer.
