Hon. Derek MombourquetteCandidate for Sydney-Membertou

Throughout his career, Derek has been a strong voice for Sydney and Cape Breton Island, always advocating for Cape Bretoners to get a fair share and the services they deserve.

Since being elected MLA in 2015, Derek has been a part of several transformative projects that will serve the Island for generations to come, like the new NSCC Sydney Marconi Campus, a new home for New Horizons Achievement Centre, renovating the former Holy Angels Convent into the Cape Breton Centre for Arts, Culture and Innovation, and the expansion of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

As a father of two young girls, Derek knows just how important it is to give our kids the best start in life. That’s why he was proud to bring pre-primary to Cape Breton. As Minister of Education, Derek was instrumental in bringing $10-a-day childcare to Nova Scotia – a program that will ensure parents are able to get back in the workforce and kids can benefit from a quality early childhood education. In opposition, Derek successfully advocated for a universal school lunch program to ensure kids have access to a healthy meal in the classroom.

Understanding the impact a cancer diagnosis has on individuals, families and communities, and that Cape Breton has high rates of cancer, Derek has championed bringing cancer care closer to home. He successfully advocated for breast reconstructive surgery to be funded through MSI, and a PET/CT scanner for the new Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Derek has always been a champion for Cape Breton Island. Before he was elected to provincial politics, Derek served as Councillor for Cape Breton Regional Municipality for four years. Derek is a proud resident of Sydney, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.
