Patricia Arab to Re-Offer for Liberals in Fairview-Clayton Park

Patricia Arab will re-offer as the Liberal candidate for Fairview-Clayton Park.

Since being elected in 2013, Patricia has served her constituents with pride. In 2017, she became the youngest female cabinet minister when she became the Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Internal Affairs and Minister of Communications Nova Scotia. In Opposition, she serves the Liberal caucus as Deputy House Leader and Energy critic.

“Representing the people of Fairview-Clayton Park for more than a decade has been one of my greatest honours,” said Arab. “We’ve accomplished so much since 2013, but we have more to do, particularly when it comes to housing and affordability. I’m proud to be part of a team that’s focused on making life better for Nova Scotians.”

As the MLA for a diverse and fast-growing community, Patricia has championed initiatives that would support low- and middle-income Nova Scotians like a universal school lunch program and reversing harmful cuts to the Heating Rebate Assistance Program. As a member of the former Liberal government, she secured funding for a new rink and community room for the Centennial Arena and brought pre-primary and Schools Plus to Fairview-Clayton Park.

“For more than 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure of serving alongside Patricia,” said Liberal Leader Zach Churchill. “She is a highly intelligent and compassionate MLA who works hard for the people she represents. I know that with Patricia as their MLA, Fairview-Clayton Park will continue to have a strong voice in the legislature.”

Braedon Clark to Re-Offer for Liberals in Bedford South

Braedon Clark will re-offer as the Liberal candidate for Bedford South.

Since his election in 2021, Braedon has proudly advocated for local projects such as new schools and the Bedford ferry to keep up with the fast-growing riding of Bedford South.

“Since being elected, I’ve aimed to be an effective, fair, and hard-working voice for the people of Bedford South,” said Clark. “We’ve achieved a lot together, but there’s more work to do, and no job I’d rather be doing. Whenever the next election comes, I’ll be ready with a message of hope, optimism, and results.”

As Housing critic, Braedon has introduced legislation that would regulate rent increases, resolve landlord and tenant disputes faster with a Residential Tenancies Enforcement Unit, and incentivize government to build more affordable housing for all.

“I’m thrilled that Braedon is putting his name on the ballot once again to represent the constituents of Bedford South,” said Liberal Leader Zach Churchill. “As an MLA, Braedon has been a strong advocate for sustainable community growth and sensible solutions to the province’s housing crisis. Our team is lucky to have his voice at the table.”

Gerard Bray Nominated as Liberal Candidate for Halifax Chebucto

Gerard Bray has been nominated as the Liberal candidate in Halifax Chebucto.

As a lifelong resident of Halifax Chebucto, Gerard is well-versed in the needs of the riding. With his wife Christine, he now raises his three young children in the same community he has always called home. Through his work as a teacher, Gerard has developed a strong sense of dedication to improving the lives of children and working families in Nova Scotia.

“I’m deeply honoured to be nominated as the Liberal candidate for Halifax Chebucto,” said Bray. “I have always been involved in our community, but with my children growing up in the same community I grew up in, attending the same aging schools, and experiencing the many challenges facing our province right now, I know that I need to step up to create positive change for the next generation of Nova Scotians.”

Aside from teaching and coaching school sports, Gerard is also a dedicated volunteer. In his commitment to creating a more affordable and healthier community, he facilitated the skate drive program that brought hundreds of skates to the Oval on the Halifax Commons, many of which continue to be loaned out each winter.

“As a teacher and young parent, Gerard understands the challenges that so many Nova Scotians are facing right now with the rising cost of living,” said Liberal Leader Zach Churchill. “Under the Houston government, more children are experiencing food insecurity and working families are struggling to make ends meet. I am confident that as an MLA, Gerard will be a strong advocate for his constituents and bring positive change to our province.”

Poor Working Conditions Cause Exodus of Nova Scotia Doctors

Nova Scotia is facing a severe healthcare crisis as many doctors are leaving the province, citing dissatisfaction with their positions and work environment under the Houston government.

A recent exit survey of physicians, obtained by the Nova Scotia Liberal Caucus through a Freedom of Information request, shows that 60 per cent of doctors who left the province in the past three years did so for other employment opportunities.

The Nova Scotia Health exit survey was completed between May 2021 and December 2023 and received 73 responses. Nearly half of the doctors say they were dissatisfied with their position and cited their work environment as a primary reason for their departure.

“Despite spending billions of dollars on healthcare, outcomes have clearly not improved for doctors and patients,” said Opposition Leader Zach Churchill. “There is already nearly 160,000 Nova Scotians without a family doctor. If the premier is going to double the population, we need to address the work environment issues doctors are dealing with.”

More than 36 per cent of physicians that completed the exit survey said the organization could have prevented them from leaving. One in four respondents had only worked with NSH for a short period – between one and five years.

“We need to ensure we’re retaining the doctors we have, especially those who are new to the province or new to the practice,” said Health and Wellness critic Kelly Regan. “We’ve heard countless stories from doctors who have immigrated to Nova Scotia but feel they’ve been set up to fail. Losing physicians in preventable situations is unacceptable.”
