Dustin RekunykCandidate for Colchester North
Dustin is of Canadian Ukrainian descent, his great-grandmother emigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 1927 to escape Stalin's collectivization policies, arriving in Quebec City by ship to meet her husband. Together they lived on a dairy farm raising three children. Dustin enjoyed visiting her and listening to stories of her homeland in broken English. She passed with Dustin holding her hand.
In 2006, Dustin relocated to Halifax and focused on his dream of joining the Canadian Forces, enlisting in January 2007. Dustin spent 15 years in the Canadian Forces, beginning with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and ending as an Intelligence Operator involved in Cyber Intelligence and Warfare.
As an Intelligence Operator, Dustin was involved in mission-critical events and received the personal coin of the Minister of National Defence and several commendations for his work, effort, ethics, and raising to the occasion. He was medically released in 2021.
Afterwards, Dustin moved back to Nova Scotia, after falling in love with the province earlier and having family located here. Dustin works as Head of Threat Intelligence where he focuses on fighting child and human trafficking and combating communities of those who engage in child sexual material, a fight close to his heart.
Dustin has a strong sense of values, morals, ethics, and beliefs; many revolve around his passion for Nova Scotia and Canada, and what he stands for. This led him to the front lines of Ukraine in 2022 after the illegal Russian occupation, sustaining injuries from artillery as a foreign fighter.
Dustin is a devoted single father and an advocate for PTSD, mental health, sexual assault, Autism, and public policy. This has led Dustin into the political arena given his belief that the current government has failed Nova Scotians and undeserving to continue serving this province.
