Affordable housing is a significant issue within our riding. Fred was very pleased to hear about the significant investment this government is making in affordable housing in the province. We need to do more and we need to do better. Working with community groups such as New Deal Development to identify affordable housing projects for seniors is an absolute necessity.
In addition, programming to allow seniors to stay in their homes longer is very important to the people of Northside Westmount. The rate of child poverty in Cape Breton is at an all-time high and the riding of Northside Westmount is very much affected. It is a priority of his to work with local organizations to develop programs and services to help our residents break the cycle of poverty in our region.
Education is a significant priority for Fred as well. The Liberal government recognizes the need for both a strong secondary and post-secondary system within our province, Cape Breton and of course Northside Westmount. The investment in a new NSCC community college is a game-changer for our community. Fred is proud to have played a significant role in the development of this new beautiful asset that the residents of Cape Breton deserve. The programming that is offered at the College and the University will allow our students to compete at any level in the province, the Country and the World.
Fred can’t say enough about the dedication of our secondary school system, the teachers and staff continue to do more with less each and every year. Aging infrastructure is hampering the ability of teachers and staff to provide the quality experience they need in our riding. We absolutely need a new middle school in the Northside area to replace the Sydney Mines Middle school.
Recreational Spaces and the environment. As a committee member of the Canadian Little League Championship tournaments in Sydney Mines for many years, Fred is proud of the investment that this Liberal Government has made in developing a world-class facility for all children and adults alike to enjoy.
In this riding, there are several beautiful beaches that need significant attention so that they can be enjoyed by all Cape Bretoners, Nova Scotians and tourists. But first, the environmental issues of cleaning our harbour must be dealt with.
It is very important that the Northside receive a sewage treatment facility to protect our harbour and allow our community to utilize the amazing recreational opportunities that we have without fear of bacteria in the water.
Healthcare is a significant issue in this riding. Fred is proud of the investment that this government has put into healthcare in all of Cape Breton and am especially happy about the new facilities to be developed on the Northside. As the government representative, Fred is excited to contribute in ensuring that the facility is built to the standards that the riding deserves. Fred will continue to work for better access to health care and facilities for the people of Northside Westmount.
As principal of NSCC Marconi Campus, Fred has been very successful in delivering new programming for our Island. For instance, he worked with the folks at New Dawn and brought a top-quality Music Arts program to Cape Breton. After one year the program released a single which is being played by radio nationally. We are developing great new programming for the new facility being developed on the waterfront of Sydney.
As principal for NSCC Marconi Campus, Fred worked very closely with Health Canada to help them make a decision to bring federal jobs to Cape Breton with an annual payroll of over 2,000,000 dollars. 26 of the hires were NSCC Marconi graduates and the program has been very successful. Many of these jobs have become permanent employees of the federal government.
