Derek Mombourquette acclaimed as Liberal candidate for Sydney-Membertou

(Halifax, NS) – Derek Mombourquette has been acclaimed as the candidate for Sydney-Membertou and will officially represent the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in the next provincial election. 

Derek has served his constituents in the Nova Scotia Legislature since 2015. Since then, he has served as the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Minister of Energy and Mines, and Minister of Lands and Forestry. Currently, Derek proudly serves as the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. 

“Over the past six years, I have made it my mission to deliver for my constituents,” said Mombourquette. “Through that hard work, we have been able to invest hundreds of millions of dollars directly into our communities. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and eager to continue this great work with Premier Rankin.” 

Derek has been a champion for Indigenous communities in his riding, leading to several important investments such as the Membertou Sportsplex and Mi’kmaw Kina’matneweyHe has advocated for better healthcare in Cape Breton, helping the Cape Breton Regional Hospital secure hundreds of millions of dollars for the construction of a new cancer centre, critical care and ER unit, as well as operational funding for the new hospice building. Additionally, he worked closely with the Department of Community Services to provide Horizon Achievement Centre with $2 million in fundingDerek also played a large role in securing millions of dollars for the construction of the NSCC Marconi Campus in Sydney as well as the second cruise ship berth for Sydney harbour.
