Expanding the Nova Scotia Community College

  • Investing $77.8 million over four years to support a major expansion of the NSCC, building the foundation of Nova Scotia’s economy recovery.
  • Creating a fair and affordable tuition model.
  • Embracing lifelong learning within our economic approach.
  • Filling labour needs in critical sectors and offering innovative programming.
  • Developing new infrastructure to support innovation and program expansion.

  • Investing $26.2 million in programs that allow Nova Scotians to upgrade their skills and develop professionally.
  • Adding 6,000 seats at the NSCC in short courses, micro-credentials, boot camps, badges, licenses, and certifications.
  • Doubling the number of seats in sector-specific preparatory programming and English language training.

  • Reducing waitlists for programs in skilled trades, health professions, early learning, information technology, and alternative energy.

Preparing Nova Scotian Students for Jobs in the Digital Economy

  • Positioning Nova Scotia to become the start-up capital of Canada.
  • Building a local pool of skilled digital workers by providing $16.8 million to Dalhousie, Acadia, SMU, and St. FX to expand computer science programs.
  • Contributing $7 million to expand NSCC’s Institute of Technology Campus, creating space for an additional 100 students.
  • Expanding the NSCC Centre for Geographic Sciences in the Annapolis Valley with a $9 million investment.

Providing Digital Skills to Mi’kmaq and Indigenous Students

  • Committing $723,100 to the PTECH program for information technology in Cape Breton to provide in-demand digital skills to Mi’kmaw and Indigenous students.

Centre of Forest Innovation at NSCC Truro

  • Investing $6.1 million over four years from the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust in a Centre of Forestry Innovation at NSCC Truro.
  • Reaching 575 graduates within three years, across micro-credential and core certificate programs.
  • Micro-credentials in pre-treatment assessment, silviculture efficiency, harvester simulator training, new forest treatments, species and stand identification, and drone training.
  • New facility set to open in fall 2022 featuring a simulation immersion lab, demonstration woodlot, and innovative technology.

Training Our Early Learning Workforce

  • Investing $10.9 million to develop the early childhood education workforce.
  • Introducing better benefits and pay for ECEs by 2022, providing a one-time grant of $500 for trained ECEs in provincially funded childcare centres, and introducing a certification process.
  • Supporting 300 currently enrolled ECE students and 300 staff currently working in childcare and pre-primary with free tuition and books.
  • Increasing diversity in early childhood education by designating seats and distributing bursaries to Mikmaq, Indigenous peoples, Black and African Nova Scotians, Acadian and Francophone Nova Scotians, and newcomers studying in ECE programs or already practicing as ECEs without a degree or diploma.
