Today, the Nova Scotia Liberals rolled out their better deal for seniors.
“Our seniors have spent their lives contributing to our province. Now, it’s our turn to make sure they’re taken care of,” said Liberal Leader Zach Churchill. “A better deal for seniors ensures health, housing, and affordability supports are available where they’re needed most.”
The Nova Scotia Liberal plan includes:
- Doubling the Seniors Care Grant: A Nova Scotia Liberal government will provide dedicated support to seniors by doubling the Seniors Care Grant to $1,500 each year to help them stay in their homes longer, stay healthy, and live better lives. Program eligibility will also be increased so that households with up to $50,000 in annual income are eligible.
- Improving Home Care and Aging-in-Place Initiatives: Nova Scotia’s aging population requires improved home care and aging-in-place initiatives. We hear that Nova Scotians want to stay in their homes and retain their independence as they age. A Nova Scotia Liberal government will increase programs that support upgrading seniors’ homes so they can age in place. As well, we will train and hire more home care workers to ensure seniors get the care they need.
- Developing a Comprehensive Seniors Housing Strategy: Sky-high rents and housing prices mean that many Nova Scotians can’t afford to move to housing that is right-sized for their lives. A Nova Scotia Liberal government will work with seniors to develop specific housing plans to meet their needs. We’ll develop options like small, walkable communities with homes for seniors or apartment buildings. We will also review the property tax system that penalizes downsizing seniors with the residential deed transfer tax.
