Affordably Transition off Coal by 2030

  • Phasing out coal by 2030, ten years earlier than planned.
  • Supporting our energy transition with training, skills development, jobs in renewable energy, and green economy opportunities.
  • Keeping electricity rates at our below inflation as we transition off coal.
  • Encouraging collaboration with partners in business, industry, nonprofit, and community to create new renewable energy initiatives.

Nova Scotia is making incredible progress on renewable energy. We have committed to affordably phasing out coal by 2030, ten years earlier than planned.

Our plan will put workers and communities at the heart of the transition with training, skills development, jobs in renewable energy, and opportunities in the green economy. The plan will mitigate cost pressures and create thousands of jobs through renewable energy initiatives and it will collaborate with our valued partners.

We are working on the best path forward to make electricity more affordable and cleaner for all Nova Scotians. After years of rate increases, our government brought in a rate stability plan in 2015, to keep electricity rates increases at or below inflation. A re-elected Liberal government will continue to keep rates stable as we transition towards a greener future.

A just transition for workers and communities will be a top priority for a re-elected Liberal government. Together with our partners, and our historic investments in NSCC, we will support transitioning workers through training opportunities and grow jobs within our communities. A Liberal government will focus on equity by ensuring populations that have traditionally been left out of the energy transition have an opportunity for skills training and new careers.

We will support the development of renewable energy initiatives through collaboration with partners in business, industry, nonprofit, and community. Together, we will replace coal with new forms of energy that keep rates stable, ensure that jobs are protected, and continue the transition towards a greener future.
