Bold Action & Ambitious Targets to Fight Climate Change

  • Reducing Nova Scotia’s emissions to 53 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and net-zero by 2050.
  • Leveraging our commitment to green technology to meet or surpass our commitment to make electricity generation carbon neutral by 2050.
  • Creating a Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth by the end of 2021.
  • Building on the Environmental Goal and Sustainable Prosperity Act and the Sustainable Development Goals Act consultations.

Climate change cannot be ignored. Our health and well-being demands ongoing action to secure a prosperous, sustainable future.

The Liberal government made Nova Scotia a national leader in the fight against climate change. We took bold action to protect our families and our environment, setting the most ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets in the country. We are committed to reducing Nova Scotia’s emissions to 53 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050. Harnessing the innovation and ingenuity of Nova Scotians, we may reach our targets even sooner.

As we reach our goals, we will make sure that Nova Scotians are proud of where their power comes from, leveraging our commitment to green technology to meet or surpass our commitment to make electricity generation carbon neutral by 2050.

We will continue to be thoughtful, process-oriented, and evidence-based as we work towards cleaner, greener, and healthier communities. Guided by the Sustainable Development Goals Act (SDGA) consultations currently underway and building on the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act (EGSPA), we will create a Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth by the end of the year. This plan will set out a clear, transparent, community-centric approach to growing the economy, meeting our GHG targets, preparing for the impacts of climate change, and fighting back against the harm being done to our environment.
