Supporting Community-Based Green Innovation

  • Incentivizing local climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts with a $12 million commitment to the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund.
  • Encouraging large multi-year projects that improve infrastructure and create jobs.
  • Supporting local communities with climate change planning, adaptation, and preparedness.

The complex challenge of climate change cannot be overcome by any single approach.

A Liberal government understands that meeting Nova Scotia’s environmental goals requires the full force of our province’s creativity, innovation, and engagement. We know that powerful ideas can emerge from unique, and even unexpected, partnerships in local communities.

The Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund (SCCF) will incentivize municipalities to develop and pursue local climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. It will reward community collaboration and innovation by committing $12 million over 3 years in support of projects that upgrade energy efficiency in community buildings and increase the use of low carbon energy. The SCCF will encourage leveraged investment in large multi-year projects to improve infrastructure and create jobs, recognizing the ambition, determination, and sustainable project planning needed to make lasting change. A Liberal government understands that local communities can’t prepare for climate change alone. We will support municipalities with climate change planning, adaptation and preparedness.

Our Government will continue to lead by example at the provincial level, directing government departments to develop climate change preparedness and adaptation plans that enhance provincial planning and complement local efforts. We will also leverage industry expertise to develop integrated climate emergency preparedness and response plans that protect Nova Scotians and support sustainability in critical sectors.
