Penny Smith acclaimed as Liberal candidate for Shelburne

(Halifax, NS) – Penny Smith has been acclaimed as the Liberal candidate for Shelburne and will represent the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in the next provincial election. Due to COVID-19, the nomination meeting was conducted virtually.

In 2016, Penny was elected to the Council of the Municipality of the District of Shelburne by acclamation, and was successfully re-elected in 2020. Penny has proudly served as Warden since 2016. Prior to being elected to politics, Penny worked for the Municipality for nearly 25 years.

“I am honoured and very excited to represent the new riding of Shelburne as the Liberal candidate,” says Smith. “I look forward to being a part of the Liberal team and working alongside Premier Rankin to represent the voice of every constituent in Shelburne County.”

Penny has been a resident of Shelburne County for her entire life and has always been an active community volunteer. She has chaired and participated in many local organizations and committees, including the Hillcrest Academy School Advisory Council, Whirligig & Weathervane Festival, Birchtown Community Centre, and Osprey Arts Centre. Penny is also a founding member of the Shelburne County chapter of 100 Women Who Care.

“Penny has been a strong advocate for the residents of Shelburne County in her role as Warden for the Municipality,” says Premier Iain Rankin. “I am thrilled that she has put her name forward and I know she will be a strong voice in our new Liberal government.”
