Liberal MLA Becky Druhan will table two bills today aimed at helping Nova Scotians save money, reduce waste and have more control over the products and services they pay for. The Right to Repair Act and the Click to Cancel Act are small changes that can make a real difference to a household budget.
If passed, the Right to Repair Act would give Nova Scotians more choice when a product breaks down. It requires manufacturers to provide necessary parts and repair information and allows consumers to choose an independent repairer, or repair the product themselves, without voiding their warranty simply because they did not use the manufacturer’s authorized repair service.
The legislation would put Nova Scotia alongside jurisdictions moving to give consumers greater control over repairs. Quebec has introduced broad repairability requirements, while new right-to-repair rules took effect across the European Union this summer. Making products easier to repair also helps keep them in use longer instead of unnecessarily sending them to landfill.
“If you bought it, you should be able to fix it,” said Druhan. “People shouldn’t have to pay a premium for an authorized repair or throw out something that could easily have been repaired. Giving Nova Scotians more repair options means lower costs, less waste and more control over the things they own.”
If passed, the Click to Cancel Act would strengthen protections against unwanted automatic renewals. It requires businesses to provide advance notice before a subscription renews, including the renewal date, amount and cancellation instructions. Consumers can cancel a renewal without a fee, including after the renewal date, and online subscriptions must offer a straightforward “click-to-cancel” option.
British Columbia and Quebec have already moved to strengthen protections around automatic renewals and subscription cancellations.
“Companies make it incredibly easy to start charging you. They should have to make it just as easy to stop,” said Druhan. “Nova Scotians should know when a subscription is renewing, what it will cost and how to cancel it before another charge hits their account.”
